Collecting Your Hire Car at Heathrow Airport - 7 Things You Need to Know

These are just a few quick points to ensure that you get your trip off to a good start and, of course, a safe and happy return.

1. Check Existing Damage:
When you return the rental car to Heathrow Airport it will be checked for damage. Basically if any is found you'll be charged.

With this in mind it's a good idea to give the car a good once over to make sure there isn't any damage. Make sure you report any pre-existing damage to the rental agents before you leave. (Damage to check for includes dents in the body, scratches in the paint, chips/cracks in the windows, any water/oil leaks under the car, tears in the fabrics of the interior, etc.)

2. Buy Excess Insurance:
If you do return with new damage then you'll be charged an Excess which can be anything up to £2000! If you haven't already bought our Nova Excess Insurance when you booked your car rental, you can also organise it with the car rental agent at Heathrow Airport.

DO NOT buy it if you have already purchased insurance with Nova as the car rental agent's Insurance will trump the Nova Insurance and you will lose all the extra benefits that Nova's Excess Insurance offers.

3. Take a quick test drive:
Sometimes a faulty car won't be obvious just from a quick inspection, so our advice is to take the car for a quick drive around the parking lot of Heathrow Airport. This could also serve to familiarise yourself with the car controls and fix the mirrors to suit your driving position. Other things to look out for: is the car manual or automatic, does the AC work, which stalk is the indicators and which is the wipers, etc.

4. Check Lights and Fluids:
Simple enough; make sure all the bulbs are functional; that the oil and water levels are adequate; that the tyres are at the correct pressure; that you have a tank of petrol and ask the car rental rep at Heathrow Airport if you have to return with a full tank. It can also be a good idea to remember which side of the car the petrol cap is on to make refuelling easier.

5. Check the Spare:
Make sure you have a proper spare tyre and not a temporary replacement. Also ensure that the wheel jack is present and functional in case it has to be used.

6. Check Rules of the Road:
If this is your first time driving in England, then you might find some differences in the Rules of the Road. Remember you'll be driving on the left, be sure you know how roundabouts work (there are quite a few surrounding Heathrow Airport), that you have your driving license with you, and so on.

7. Get your maps/GPS in order:
If you're driving out of Heathrow airport to somewhere specific, it may be wise to make sure you know where you are going on the map and you could perhaps ask your car rental agent which is the best way out of the airport and how to get on your way.

After you've done your checks and you're satisfied everything is in order you can hit the open road. Getting in and out of airports can be a little tricky with all the traffic, signs and an unfamiliar car, so again make sure to test drive the car to familiarise yourself with it.
